Congratulations! You progressed your way through all four of the Newborn Baby Care courses, each with their own focal points on the many dimensions of maintaining newborn health in the first month of life.
Now we arrive at a crucial part of your learning –the Newborn Baby Care Capstone- Case Studies, which is your opportunity to take what you have learned and synthesize, integrate, and apply what you know to a series of case studies. Interacting with these real-life scenarios will help you retain the specialization content and be ready to put it into practice in your own care-providing environment.
Together we will experience key moments of the courses, this time through the lens of case studies. We will begin with addressing jaundice and performing screenings and assessments covered in Course 1. From there we will consider case studies for both heart and lung health representing Course 2. Then we will enter new territory, the first doctor’s visit once baby has gone home. Here you will bring together elements from Courses 3 and 4, assessing baby and also main care providers. No matter what capacity you do or will provide newborn baby care, the experience of this final capstone course will positively impact your understanding and ability to put that understanding into practice. The newborns, families, and other care providers you engage with will benefit greatly from your efforts.

Introduction to Capstone
The Newborn Baby Care Capstone- Case Studies is your opportunity to take what you have learned and synthesize, integrate, and apply what you know to a series of case studies. Preventative Healthcare for the Newborn Baby
In this module, you review some of the medical interventions and skills to keep newborns healthy in the days and weeks after they have been born. You''ll apply your knowledge of medicines like Vitamin K and erythromycin and how they can prevent serious illnesses. screening tests like hearing screening and newborn blood screening that help to make sure that babies are set up for success right from the start. In review, analysis, and application, we'll cover jaundice, and application of the simple ways to identify and treat this common presentation and prevent any harm to babies.
The Newborn Assessment: Heart Health
Congenital heart diseases, that is, malformations of the heart that begin in fetal life and are present at birth, are some of the most common congenital anomalies. One percent of all children are born with cardiac anomalies. Of those, about 25% have critical congenital heart disease, heart disease that requires intervention during the first month of life in order to avoid death or disability. In the CCHD screening lectures from Course I, CCHD from Course 2 and its cases, you were introduced to the concept of congenital heart disease, when to think about it and how to diagnose it. These are important skills to master, as these congenital problems, when not treated, can result in disability and even death for your young patients.
In this capstone module, you will be presented with two cases, one extensive, the other brief. These are meant to represent the range of heart disease that you may encounter in practice. You will be asked to evaluate these cases in several ways.
The Newborn Assessment: Lung Health
In this Capstone module on Lung Health Assessment, we will review normal components of the respiratory exam. In application, we will use this information to in case study analysis, to recognize “abnormal” respiratory exams in newborns, meaning recognition of physical exam findings consistent with respiratory distress. We will apply the information we learned about the respiratory exam to work through a case of a newborn with respiratory distress
Comprehensive Assessment to Keep Newborn Babies Safe & Healthy
Learners, you are nearing the end of your training in the Care of the Newborn Baby. In this final Capstone segment, you will be asked to synthesize much of what you have learned about well newborn care. In the real world, this occurs in the outpatient setting. In some places, this visit would occur in an office or clinic. Another option is for a medical provider to visit the family in their home. Regardless of where the meeting takes place, the concerns are the same.
In the following case, you will be presented with information regarding a newborn’s first visit to her primary care provider. You will be asked to explain how you would approach some of the aspects of baby’s care.
